How to Install Artificial Grass Like a Pro

If you’re sick of coaxing some life out of your yard, you may consider artificial grass. Rather than spending an inordinate amount of time landscaping and caring for your lawn, fake turf looks nice without all that extra effort.

Artificial grass can also help brighten your home and yard if you’re trying to sell it. For full instructions about how to install artificial grass, check out the article below.

Prepare the Area

This step can go two ways, depending on the grass you have in your yard already. If the grass is in good shape, you could donate the sod to someone who needs it. Here, rent a sod cutter to take the old lawn out.

The alternative is a lawn with patchy grass. In that case, use a weed killer about 2 weeks before you want to remove the old turf and wait until the organic material dies. Then remove the old grass and other plants using shovels and gloves.

You may also want to remove the sprinkler heads to help level the ground. Tamp down the soil by walking on it to help level the ground.

After the ground is level, wait until a dry day. Make sure you have good drainage (install a drainage system if you think it will be a problem). Then install a plastic bender board as a waterproof barrier.

Add a weed control landscape fabric over the whole area. Then lay fine gravel over the top, something at least as small as 3/8″ diameter. This will also help with drainage a little.

Install the New Turf

You’re ready to roll out the underlayment. Some synthetic grass doesn’t need this step, so check with the company to find out. Then you can roll out the artificial grass over the whole area.

Use a utility knife to cut the lawn to the right shape and then stretch it with a carpet stretcher tool. Then fasten the seams using materials provided by the same company that sold the turf. They’ll have the glue and other materials designed for use with your brand of grass.

There are different ways to seam the turf. Check to make sure you’re following instructions for your type of grass. Many will say to lay a seaming tape and apply glue, then press each side to attach it.

Finishing Up How to Install Artificial Grass

The final steps help make sure your artificial grass will stay beautiful. Install stakes around the perimeter to hold it in place. Then add infill or ballast and rake over it.

Water the lawn to help the infill settle and decide if the turf still looks bare. If you need to, install more infill until the grass looks the way you want and feels bouncy.
