Types of Mobile Homes and How to Choose One for You

Around 5.6% of the American population lives in mobile homes.

People started living in mobile homes in the 1930s during the great depression out of necessity. But in the 1950s onwards, people chose to live in trailer parks over suburbs because of the low living costs and freedom they offered.

Nowadays, there are tons of different types of mobile homes you can live in. The design and quality of modern mobile homes are outstanding and some are so luxurious you won’t want to live in a house again.

Read on to discover the main types of mobile homes for sale to see which one fits your needs.

Single Wide Mobile Homes

One of the most common types of mobile homes, single wide mobile homes are houses with one single section.

They can be anywhere from 480 square feet to 1,440 square feet. The average length is between 40 to 80 feet and the width is between 12 to 18 feet.

Their design is long and they are pre-manufactured and delivered as a single structure. This makes them more stable and less prone to leaks than other options.

Because they are a common type of mobile home trailer, you can often buy used ones if you don’t have the budget to buy a brand new one.

Double Wide Mobile Homes

Double wide mobile homes are like single-wides, except (and this won’t shock you) they are twice as wide.

Because they are so big, they are not manufactured and delivered as one structure. They arrive in two structures, and the manufacturer attaches the two pieces on site.

Most double wide mobile homes are anywhere from 640 square feet and 2,560 square feet. This means they are often between 40 to 80 feet long (same as a single wide) and 20 to 36 feet wide.

The biggest advantage of a double wide is, of course, more space. But it also means you don’t have to cut down the size of rooms to create hallway space.

Triple Wide Mobile Homes

Triple wide mobile homes are often (but not always!) three times as big as single wide mobile homes.

Like double wide mobile homes, the home manufacturer constructs them on the home owner’s rented or private property.

Standard triple wide mobile homes are 960 square feet to 3,600 square feet. They have a length of around 40 to 80 feet (again, same as the others) and a width of 30 to 54 feet. They feel more like a normal single-story home than a mobile home.

It can get confusing, as some homeowners decide to have mobile homes with four or five units but they are still known as triple wides. Here is more information if you’d like to learn more about mobile homes.

Which Types of Mobile Homes Are Right for You?

These are the main types of mobile homes, and the right one for you will depend on your budget and how many square feet you need.

But regardless of which one you choose, there’s nothing quite as exciting as owning a property and having full control over your space.
