How to Choose the Best Bedroom Lighting

Light at the wrong times can disrupt our circadian rhythm, which can lead to a host of physical and mental disorders, including mood disorders, metabolic disorders, and even cancers.

That means bedroom lighting needs to be carefully considered with health in mind. The lighting should be layered, relaxing, and balanced. Of course, the right lighting can also enhance the mood and aesthetic of the bedroom’s design.

To learn more about what types of lighting work best in the bedroom, check out the guide below.

Types of Bedroom Lighting

The three main types of bedroom lighting are overhead lighting, accent lighting, and task lighting.

When considering your lighting options, make sure to consider them within these three domains. You want to have each domain represented so the lighting in the room is layered and balanced.

Ceiling Fixtures

Overhead lighting is usually accomplished with a ceiling fixture of some kind. The main styles of ceiling fixtures include:

  • Track lighting
  • Pendant lights
  • Flush mount lights
  • Semi-flush mount lights
  • Ceiling fans

Track lighting lends an industrial aesthetic to the space and can have multiple functions. It may be used as accent lighting when directed at artwork or other design elements in the bedroom. It could also be installed in the closet as task lighting.

Pendant lights hang down from the ceiling, making them tricky to install, but great for decor. They are usually hung in pairs, positioned over the nightstands or over the bottom of the bed.

Flush mount and semi-mount lights are more common designs. Flush lighting is installed directly on the ceiling, while semi-mount lights hang down from a short rod. Flush lights work best for low ceilings, but make sure the glass is treated as clear lights are too bright.

Finally, ceiling fans are a smart, functional choice for homeowners in warm climates.

Table and Floor Lamps

Accent lighting is meant to brighten dark spots in a larger bedroom. They should be subtle and make the room feel cozy. Both table and floor lamps are designed to accomplish this.

Floor lamps are ideal for illuminating empty corners of the room. Table lamps, however, need a table, desk, or dresser to work. Table lamps are often more decor-focused than functional, enhancing the appearance of a nightstand or end table.

Wall Sconces

Task lighting is meant to be functional, providing bright light for tasks like reading. Closets also need a functional task light to brighten the dark space and allow people to see their clothing. For this type of lighting, wall sconces usually do the trick.

The wall sconces for this should be directional. Additionally, try to keep them a few feet from the mattress and a few inches from the headboard.
