Plumbing Leak Repairs 101: How To Fix Any Leak

Plumbers tape is an effective way to seal a pipe and bring about some temporary relief from a leak. Plumbers tape is very easy to use and apply. It’s extremely versatile and can be used on pipe fittings and threads.

First, you want to unscrew the coupling nut. Then, loosen the other coupling nut and pull the P trap away from your draining pipe.

Wrap some plumbers tape around the threads of the pipe.

You can then move the P trap back to where it was so that it is joined with the draining pipe. Use the coupling nut to reconnect the two pipes.

If you are dealing with a low-pressure line then you should also consider using self-fusing silicone tape. This forms a seamless, watertight layer when you stretch it.

You can then wrap the silicon material over the pipe. Stretch it as you make the tape taught. Cover the leak with several layers of tape.

You can use pipe putty or epoxy putty to temporarily fix leaking pipes. Pipe putty is made to get hard at room temperature. It then seals cracks and holes.

First, you want to turn the water supply line in your house off. Then, drain the damaged line. Make sure that the area that is going to be fixed is dry and clean. 

This will make sure that the pipe putty is going to stick to the pipe properly.

You then want to tear enough of the pipe putty off to fully cover the area around the leak. Massage the putty until it is stretchy enough to be applied. Then, press it against the pipe.

After the putty is in place and hardened, turn your water back on and see if the pipe is still leaking. 

How to Fix a Leaking Pipe with a Patch and Clamp

If you are dealing with a big rupture in a pipe then you want to use repair claims to make a temporary fix. Make sure that you also have a neoprene rubber patch.

The first step is to turn off your water supply so that no more water comes through the leaky pipe. Then, clean the area around the source of the leak.

Use a metal file and smooth out any sharp edges that can cut through the patch.
