4 Home Insulation Tips That Make a Significant Difference
Out with the old, and in with the new. It’s a new year and hopefully, it bodes better for many than the last one. But just because 2020 is now gone, doesn’t mean that the same old problems may not persist.
One such problem could be your home insulation. During the winter months, you may use your heating system quite extensively, but you could also be losing a lot of money because of improper insulation and it will reflect on your energy bills.
If you would like to save some money on your bill every month, here are five insulation tips that’ll make quite the difference.
1) Get a Door Snake
Not your average garden snake, a door snake acts as a gap filler between your door and the floor. Often heat escapes through the gaps of doors and windows. But this can be mitigated at least for your doors by a door snake.
Door snakes are relatively easy to make if you prefer not to buy one. Take a look.
2) Hang Thicker Curtains and More
If door snakes take care of the gaps below your doors, hanging thick curtains can help reduce drafts from your windows and keep the warm air in.
Caulking gaps in the window sill will reduce the amount of draft that allows heat to escape your home. and you can also try adding window film.
Window film reduces the amount of light allowed into the home. This can go a long way especially in the summer, and if you are uncomfortable handling this on your own, you can hire private insulation contractors.
3) Plug Your Fireplace
Most fireplaces can cause major drafts for your home, and cost you much more on your bills, almost up to 30 percent on your energy bill.
But if you plug up your fireplace with an inflatable piece of urethane or one that you make yourself, you can keep the cost of your bills down by plugging your chimney whenever the fireplace is not in use.
Be careful though to check and unplug it whenever you choose to use it again.
4) Insulate Your Water Heater
Another way to save energy is not as widely known: insulating your water heater.
Your tank can suffer from heat loss as well, and cost you a lot of money in the long run. If your tank is relatively new, then chances are it has already come with insulation.
However, if it is an older one, then you should check if it is insulated. You can reduce up to 45 percent heat loss by wrapping your water heater in an insulation blanket, which is usually made of aluminum foil or fiberglass.
