Extra finishes you can add to your steel garage door include insulated construction and multiple layers for enhanced durability, as well as painting finishes that will improve the aesthetic of the door. 

The only real downsides to steel garage doors is that they can be subject to corrosion if not properly maintained. Additionally, they’re known for denting easily. 

Wood 

Wood was actually the first garage door material ever available. Although it’s been around for a long time, this material still continues to appeal to the modern buyer thanks to its great pricing and aesthetic appeal. 

People also like wood garage doors because they come in a variety of colors, finishes, and styles. They’re also typically built with plies or layers in order to prevent warping. 

The type of wood you choose will affect the durability and maintenance needs of the door, so make sure to do your research on the different woods available. 

The downside to a wood garage door is that it requires regular maintenance, specifically, sanding and refinishing. It can also be vulnerable to cracks, rot, warping, and insect infestation. 

Aluminum 

Aluminum is also another new garage door material worth considering, as it’s known for being lightweight, versatile, and easy to maintain. 

While you don’t have to worry about rust or corrosion with an aluminum garage door, you will need to worry about denting. However, if you install laminated panels, this can prevent denting. 

Fiberglass 

Fiberglass garage doors are known for being low maintenance and lightweight. People like this material because it’s more durable than wood, but can be produced to look like wood. 

It’s also good at withstanding dents and penetration from insects and moisture. However, fiberglass doesn’t do a very good job of insulating your garage, and it typically doesn’t stand up well to extreme climates. 

Vinyl 

Vinyl is a very durable material that’s resistant to breaking and denting. These garage doors require very little maintenance and usually just need a quick hose down in order to remain clean. 

However, vinyl doors don’t come in as many design and color options.
